The vast majority of the time the bride runs point on the wedding planning and all of my communication is with her. Sometimes a couple will ask me to send emails to both of them or a groom will contact me in secret to orchestrate a special surprise, but usually I’ll hear about the groom and his wedding thoughts through the bride and don’t have any contact with him until we meet on Maui.
It’s always fun when grooms are excited to be part of the wedding planning action. I’ve coordinated a few weddings with the groom only and they will often tell me something along the lines of, “The bride is really stressed out over this whole wedding thing, so I told her I would take care of it because how hard could it be?” On wedding day when everything comes together beautifully, the groom might admit that planning a wedding turned out to be more involved than he originally thought. The bride and I just smile at each other and congratulate the groom on a good well done.
Groom Eric was my main point of contact for this wedding, and he let me know he was under pressure to make sure the day was perfect for his bride Irina. I worked with Irina on her flowers and hair and makeup, but Eric did everything else. He came to me great ideas and questions, which I loved because that’s what I’m here for.
Maluaka Beach was pretty busy when we first got there, but the couple took some pre-wedding photos with Aundrea and Florian of BellaEva Photography and it cleared up before the ceremony so we could snag a good spot.
Eric stood next to Kahu Kamuela and watched as Irina glided down the stairs to guitarist Ka’ena Elaban singing “Over the Rainbow.” Eric and Irina were joined together in matrimony with a touching Hawaiian ceremony surrounded by their closest family and friends. They then celebrated their marriage with a first dance to “Into the Mystic,” a special request song that Ka’ena learned for their wedding.
Eric did a wonderful job making all the decisions needed to plan their wedding, and the bride and guests were rightly impressed. Grooms bring a unique perspective and change of pace to wedding planning, and I’m definitely looking forward to working with more grooms in the future!
