We received an inquiry from Barbara, the Mother of the Groom, for an intimate sunset beach wedding just five days before the desired date. Their Maui vacation had been planned months in advance, but with busy work schedules and a baby on the way, bride Souraya “Reya” and groom Trevor decided to use the trip to tie the knot and enlisted Barbara to help them plan a small, romantic beach wedding. Luckily, we were available and quickly worked with Barbara to pull together all the details.
The biggest request from the groom was live music. Trevor is a big fan of Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwoʻole aka Braddah Iz and really wanted someone who could play like him. Braddah Iz was one-of-a-kind, but we got the next best thing. Wailau Ryder was a guitar player in Braddah Iz’s band. When Wailau heard how much of a fan Trevor was, he played a special song after the ceremony and Trevor was amazed.
Picking the beach was one of the toughest decisions. We visited many beaches together to find the right one. Trevor and Reya really wanted a beach that had a variety of backgrounds, the best chance at a beautiful sunset, plus some kind of bathroom facility on site (super important for an expecting mama-to-be). Despite staying on the west side and needing to drive over to the south side, Reya and Trevor chose Po’olenalena Beach, which truly delivered on the gorgeous sunset that night!
